Queen Charlie Can Reign At Maitland

By Stuart Turner

It takes a lot to get Leo Vanderburg carried away when it comes to greyhound racing but he has a spring in his step ahead of Thursday’s Maitland Supporters Club Gold Collar Final (400m).

Vanderburg’s charge Queen Charlie jumps from box two in a high-quality final and looks a strong chance to claim the $5000 top prize in the day’s eighth race.

Queen Charlie has been in superb form recently, ran a terrific 22.26 in last week’s heat and looks well drawn here.

Vanderburg has seen enough racing never to get too confident but believes this draw has given his impressive charge every chance.

“I was ecstatic (with the draw),” the 66-year-old said. “She couldn’t be drawn better.

“I was hoping for boxes one, two or three, so this is fine.

“This is a hard race and there’s not a lot in it, (but) where she’s drawn gives her a decent chance.”

Queen Charlie has been a consistent performer for Vanderburg, with 11 wins and 10 minor placings from 29 starts to her name.

A daughter of former Australian Greyhound of the Year and top sire El Grand Senor, she has won three of her last four and has a great record from box two.

Gun Richmond Vale trainer Jason Mackay’s Megan Keeping (box six) is a tough chance but Queen Charlie looks in top fitness and form.

“She’s had a couple of small injuries over the last few months but she’s back to her best now,”  Vanderburg said.

“She’s a lovely greyhound as well. You put her in the back of the car and she doesn’t raise her head until the track.

“There’s a couple of nice races coming up like the Maitland Cup which are tempting. She can certainly have a go at that.

“I’m not overly confident here but I think she has a chance.”

King Sapphire (race three), Wild Wright in race six and race seven’s Foxy Rogan look good chances to earn wins and complete the quaddie.
