Conlon Eyeing Another Roman Conquest

By Stuart Turner

Late bloomer Grand Roman has been richly rewarding owner-trainer John Conlon’s faith in him recently and can enjoy another triumph at Thursday’s Albion Park meeting.

The sprinter jumps from box one in the tattsbet.com Stakes (520m) and looks a strong chance to claim his third win in four starts.

Grand Roman produced arguably the run of his career last week, winning over the 520m at Albion Park in 29.89 and beating a quality field including Bill’s Fantasy and Group winner Rose of Galo.

The greyhound’s early career was hampered by injury problems but he is in peak condition now and Conlon believes his charge should run another good race here.

“I think I pushed him a little too much early on,” Conlon said. “He had a few metacarpal problems and took a while to get back to his best.

“If he hadn’t had those injuries he would be up with the best (in Queensland). He is no champion but he has ability.

“I’ve had to play it by ear and take it easy with him but he has been good to me.

“He can win again here.”

A son of former Australian Greyhound of the Year El Grand Senor, Grand Roman’s win last week took his record to 14 wins and 12 minor placings from 40 starts.

The consistent greyhound has won one and placed on his three previous starts with the red rug and has raced solidly since the New Year.

He faces another quality field this week, though, including double Group-winner Iva Vision (box six) and last year’s Lismore Cup winner Yogi Blue, who goes in box seven.

“If Iva Vision runs a 29.69 like he can then he will beat mine without a doubt,” Conlon said.

“(But) Grand Roman has got the alley he needed. I’ve no excuses with that draw.

“He is in as good condition as he can be right now so hopefully he can win.”

In-form Elusive Desire and Apatite looks strong chances to win in races two and three respectively.
