Classic Contest Awaits In Association Cup

By Stuart Turner

Three-time Group winner Space Star faces a rematch with recent Super Stayers winner Luna Jinx in a top-quality Group 1 Association Cup (720m) Heat this Saturday.

Victorian Space Star (pictured), who has been in golden form since the start of the year with six wins from seven starts, jumps from box six in the third of three Heats.

Robbie Britton’s gun greyhound has been Australia’s top stayer in recent months, with her run of victories including the Group 2 Summer Distance Plate at Wentworth Park in January.

With five wins from nine previous starts at the Sydney track and her imposing record, the former NSW contender looks a strong favourite here to take the title.

Luna Jinx, who beat Space Star when the pair met at The Meadows earlier this month in the Group 1 Super Stayers decider, may provide the strongest opposition.

She has never raced at Wentworth Park before but trialled brilliantly at the track last Saturday and is in good form herself.

Darryl Chapman’s in-form Tuavasa Shek looks the best NSW hope and jumps from box one in the first Heat.

Tuavasa Shek has won six of his last seven, including a fine 42.53 triumph at Wentworth Park last month.

Queenslander Mullaway, who broke the 600m track record at Albion Park last week, jumps from box six in the same race.

He ran a 42.62 at Wentworth Park earlier this month and could be a decent roughie for the series.

The Brooke Ennis-trained Lady Toy, who finished ahead of Space Star as runner-up in the Super Stayers behind Luna Jinx, jumps from box five in the second Heat.

Lady Toy ran a 41.85 at Wentworth Park earlier this month and finished second behind Space Star in the WA Galaxy last month.

She also looks a possible threat to Space Star in the series.

The Association Cup Heats are part of an action-packed night of racing this Saturday at Wentworth Park.

Four Golden Easter Egg Heats and three Heats of the Ultra Sense, a $15,000-to-the-winner Listed race, also take place.

The Association Cup decider takes place next Saturday as part of a star-studded Golden Easter Egg finals night.
