Harrises Hope For Magic Win At Casino

By Stuart Turner

Magic Display goes for career win number 21 at Casino today as she prepares for another crack at the forthcoming Group 1 Golden Easter Egg.

The greyhound (pictured), a finalist in last year’s Golden Easter Egg, jumps from box seven in the Virbac Animal Health Stakes (484m).

Among the tough opposition here in the day’s seventh race is in-form local White Pony (box three) and top Queenslander Renatus in box four.

Magic Display has one victory in her last 11 starts but has been mostly racing top-drawer chasers and looks a good chance here.

“I think she is back to her best now,” Len Harris, who trains her alongside wife Evelyn, said.

“She ran one of her best times at Wentworth Park two starts back and this is her second look at the new track at Casino after she ran third there last week.

“I’m very happy with how she is coming along. I’m sure this is a tough race but I think she can win.”

Magic Display, who also has 20 minor placings to her name and was a recent Group 2 Gosford Cup finalist, has been one of the state’s standout chasers since debuting in July 2013.

The sprinter has accrued almost $70,000 in prizemoney for the Harrises, who work of Whiteman Creek on the NSW North Coast.

She won both her heat and semi-final in last year’s Easter Egg before finishing fifth in the decider.

“We’ve got to have a go, haven’t we,” Harris said.

“She had a fall at Wentworth Park just after last year’s Egg and I think she still remembers it. It took away a little of her determination.

“She ran personal best first and second sectionals at Wentworth Park two weeks ago (so) hopefully we’ll have some luck with her.”

Magic Display is among a kennel of well-raced campaigners for the couple, who have been involved with the sport for most of their 48 years of marriage.

“Our dogs come first,” Harris said. “We make our beds once a day, but Evelyn makes our dogs' beds at least twice a day.

“Greyhounds love racing – ours race until they are five years old.

“What’s the secret? Nothing – just TLC. That’s what we show to our greyhounds.

“If you look after your greyhounds, they will look after you.”

Phantom Reign won well here last start and looks the bet of the day in race eight.

Take Belt Driven and Country Charm to complete the quaddie in races five and six.
