Spacecraft Ready To Star Again At Gosford

By Stuart Turner

He is currently one of NSW’s most in-form chasers but Lorraine Atchison believes there can be a lot more to come from Spacecraft – starting at Tuesday night’s Gosford meeting.

The impressive chaser jumps from box two in the Betfair Blue Paws Super Series Final (515m) and is the clear favourite after a scorching performance in last week’s heats.

A son of legendary Brett Lee, he produced a storming first sectional time of 4.35 on his way to a sensational 29.35 win.

Spacecraft enjoys his visits to Gosford and Atchison is confident of another win here.

“I expected him to go exceptionally well, especially when he jumped so well,” she said. “That’s the secret to seeing his best.

“He has been taking the first stride to get his momentum, but if he comes out on level terms again he will be hard to beat.

“It’s a tough race but I expect him to win again here.”

Spacecraft’s terrific win was his second consecutive triumph over the 515m at Gosford and took his record to eight successes from 20 starts.

He already has one Wentworth Park triumph to his name over the 520m and Atchison said he should race again in the city this Saturday night.

The trainer is eyeing a possible crack at next month’s Group 1 Golden Easter Egg heats and Atchison believes he could contend for the $250,000-to-the-winner series.

“He’s better out wide,” she said. “If you gave me the preference then I would always want the eight for him, but he can win from anywhere.

“To win a race like the Golden Easter Egg, I think you have to have a dog that can lead at the first corner. If he can keep running these first sectionals, he would be competitive.

“I’m just keeping my fingers crossed he continues to do that.”

This is the seventh of 10 races on the quality card at Gosford.

Seven Jacks (box five), who won a recent National Derby heat, looks a strong chance in race eight.

Jody Fly and Late Male, who both have the red rug, seem the strongest contenders to complete the quaddie in races five and six.

Best bet of the night looks like Gundal A Gogo (race three), who has won three out of three at the track and is dropping back in class here.
