Free Candy Can Earn More Sweet Success

By Stuart Turner

Free Candy defied a tough box draw to produce a superb win last Saturday and he looks a good chance to take out this Saturday’s Greyhounds WA Summer Chase Final (642m).

The Steve Withers-trained chaser, who won from box eight over the same distance last week, jumps from box one in this Saturday’s $11,500-to-the-winner decider (race five).

Withers had cast doubt pre-race on the ability of his chaser, who won last year’s Group 2 WA Solo Oaks and has 20 triumphs from 38 starts, to win from what he described as a “horrific draw”.

Having produced a superb run of 37.47 to defeat a quality field, Withers should me more confident this week.

A daughter of notable sire Collision, Free Candy has won three out of three over the 642m and is a quality chaser.

She has won two and placed once on her three previous outings from box one, from where she jumps from here and should be tough to stop if she produces a repeat of last week's effort.

The field does include classy former Victorian chaser All Strung Out and several other handy chasers but Free Candy is bang in form and looks the one to back.

Another greyhound who looks ideally drawn to win at Cannington is Starlight Jack in race four.

Last year’s Group 3 WA All Stars Sprint winner should be too strong with the red rug, with which he has an imposing record.

He faces talented kennelmate Quartz Bale but with a clear run he should have too much speed.

Politician (race seven) and Enfield Mask in race eight look good chances to complete the quaddie.

Both have been running well recently and should have too much for the respective fields here.

Look for Turner and Hooch to repeat last week’s win from box one in meeting’s first race, while Oh Happy Days is another likely winner with the red rug in race two.
