Bass Louder Aims To Boom Again

By Stuart Turner

Bass Louder is not just winning races - he is helping Kevin Pearce turn back the clock in style.

The exciting chaser, who goes over 520m in the Rapidvite Stakes (race eight) at Wentworth Park on Friday night, won over the same distance at the Glebe track last Friday.

It was owner-trainer Pearce’s first victory at the home of NSW greyhounds for more than 20 years.

There was a late night drive back home for the 77-year-old after the win – but every kilometre was worth it.

“I never get too excited, but I was giving him some encouragement under my breath,” he said with a grin.

“It was a good feeling to win down there, especially with the prizemoney you get. That helps us country blokes.

“We didn’t get home until about midnight. I wasn’t too active the next day – but it was worth it.”

Since debuting in August last year, Bass Louder has been one of the standout country NSW chasers.

The chaser's form had made a $2.90 shot for the race, which he won in a smart 30.27 on a damp Wentworth Park track.

His win last Friday took his record to nine wins from 16 starts, including winning the $10,000-to-the-winner Soldier’s Saddle at his home track in December.

Bass Louder’s win at Wentworth Park took the chaser’s prizemoney haul to almost $19,000 – with possibly plenty more to come.

“I’ve had some good dogs but I’ve never had a dog win this much prize-money,” Pearce said.

“I’ve had dogs capable of winning down at Wentworth Park but I was never that interested in travelling down there.

“It must be at least 20 years since I had a winner there, so it was pretty special.”

If consistent Bass Louder, who also has five other minor placings to his name, continues this form then he may be a decent outsider for the forthcoming Group 1 Golden Easter Egg.

The $250,000-to-the-winner Easter Egg series starts with heats at Wentworth Park on March 21.

Bass Louder is back in action at Wentworth Park this Friday in a field containing Group 1 winner Rue De Kahn and Steve White's Foxy Nakita.

Retired farmer Pearce is keeping cool about taking on more big races with his exciting charge – but is looking forward to more visits to the big smoke.

“I’ve never been interested in big races,” he said. “I don’t like a dog to race above its grade - I think they can lose their confidence.

“But if he keeps winning at Wentworth Park, you’d better believe I’ll keep going back there.”

Strong contenders at Wentworth Park this Friday include Let It Develop (race two) and Unbroken in the fourth.
