Boom Chasers Load Up For Cannonball

By Stuart Turner

Standout chasers Winsome Mission and Assertive Bella go head-to-head while flying I’m Pedro is being spruiked by trainer Sydney Wales as a strong contender at Saturday’s high-quality Richmond meeting.

Lightning fast starter Premier Mozz (race two), in-form Zipping Sonny in race six and dangerous Silver Label (race 10) are also in action at the meeting, which features four heats of the Kevin Waters and Sons Towing Richmond Cannonball Sprint Series OVER 400m.

The one to watch, though, may be I’m Pedro, who jumps from box three in a high-quality second heat (race seven) and looks in strong form.

He returned to winning ways last start here with a commanding 22.50 run and Wales is confident of another strong display here.

“I’m telling you, if he jumps well and gets a clear run he will run a good time,” the trainer said.

“I said to people last start that he was going to run a good time. When you handle a dog you can feel the improvement in them and I knew he was feeling good.

“I just feel he is coming to the fore now. I’m rapped with him.”

I’m Pedro won eight of his first 17 starts, including wins in strong company at Bulli, Richmond, Wentworth Park and Richmond, Before sustaining a bad toe injury.

His recOVERy was then further hampered by a blood problem but he looks back to his best now, as underlined by his superb win OVER a decent field at Richmond last week.

Wales is targeting a possible crack at the forthcoming Golden Easter Egg for his chaser and said he is “excited” for I’m Pedro’s prospects OVER the coming weeks.

Before he cut his toe at Wentworth Park he was doing well,” Wales said.

“He’s feeling good again and I’m OVER the moon with how he is looking.”

Jason Mackay’s promising Sid Vicious looks the bet of the day in race three but there a host of other eye-catching chasers here.

In addition to recent Paws of Thunder runner-up Assertive Bella, recent Group 1 Winsome Mission faces a strong field including kennelmate Winsome Jacko and Anthony Azzopardi’s quality chaser Cosmic Angel (pictured, pink rug).

Winsome Mission is in strong form, though, and looks a good tough to beat from the outside box.

Sid Swain’s Silver Label looks ideally drawn in box one to take out the 10th race, while promising stayer Zipping Geoff can triumph in the eighth OVER 717m.
