Pop the Cork Aims To Fly At Ipswich

By Stuart Turner

Pop The CORK">CORK did his father Brett Lee proud on his racing debut and looks a strong chance for this Saturday’s Group 2 Memorial Maiden (520m) semi-finals at Ipswich.

Reg Kay’s promising chaser jumps from box seven in the first of four heats having enjoyed a sparkling start to his career on the track.

Pop The CORK, a son of the legendary sprinter, was a $1.50 shot for last week’s heats and roared home by almost eight lengths in a superb 30.34.

With that dominant performance under his belt, he looks the one to back in the first semi-final (race five).

Ron Ball’s Black Casper (box one) looks drawn to challenge here but Kay’s greyhound already looks a huge contender for the series.

James Gallaway’s Legend was another impressive winner in last week’s heats and looks a good chance in the third semi-final.

A son of Barcia Bale, he went round in 30.65 and should be capable of winning from the outside box here in that form.

The second and fourth semi-finals look much tougher to pick a winner from.

Vegas Bound looks drawn well in the inside to take the second semi-final but the smarter money may be worth going on Heidi Benz (box two).

She has had three solid runs so far in her career and ran a decent 30.93 from the tough box five last week.

The fourth heat also looks fairly even but For Luck (box two) ran a good 30.58 last week and with thisdraw should again go well.

Trainer Lee Wylie is enjoying a successful year so his chaser Youi (box seven) should be well-prepared and looks to have decent ability.

The $40,000-to-the-winner final takes place next Saturday.
