Mista Grant Looking To Spark Again At Goulburn

By Stuart Turner

David Grant knows all about creating a spark and he looks like enjoying more success at Goulburn today with livewire Grant">Grant">Mista Grant.

The impressive newcomer goes for three wins from his first three starts when he jumps from box seven in the Mighty Claire 2014 GOTY Stakes (457m).

This is a first start over the distance for the promising pup after two good wins at Richmond over the 400m.

Grant, who combines training with his job as an electrical contractor, believes Grant">Mista Grant is on the way to becoming a city class chaser.

“That’s what we are building for,” the trainer said.

“He’s got good early speed and a smart head on his shoulders.

“I’m not worried about him here. As long as he jumps well, he should have the speed to go round them and pinch it.”

A son of Head Bound x Little Bit Fancy, who raced across the country for eight wins from 22 starts, Grant">Mista Grant looks one to watch.

There does not appear much to worry him in this field, with perhaps Claretown Bert (race eight) the strongest opponent for the day’s seventh race.

“This track should suit him,” Grant said.

“We are stepping him up and we didn’t want to try him somewhere with a bend start.

“He is one of the quickest dogs in our kennels (and) I’m confident he can run well here.”

Grant has only been training for about two years after initially having shares in a greyhound.

He works in tandem with cousin Garry and the pair have enjoyed notable success already, scoring a prized Wentworth Park win last year with handy chaser Cheeky Grant.

“It was terrific,” he said. “You couldn’t get the grins off our faces.

“It can be tough, but our wives help us out. When one of us is working, the other is with the greyhounds.

“It’s just enjoyable seeing the greyhounds going well at the different venues. That’s the best part.

“My advice to other new trainers would be listen to what other people say – even if you think at first it may be rubbish – take it all in and then act on what you think is right.

“It’s going well and hopefully we can have more success.”

Other strong contenders at Goulburn include Pale Ale (race eight) and Spring Murder in race nine.
