Lucy Lobster Back in Work

By Jeff Collerson

Lucy Lobster, winner of the 2014 Group 1 Vic Peters Classic, is on the comeback trail.

“We found a little niggling injury so gave her a break from racing but she has just come back into work,’’ trainer Charlie Lamb said.

Before returning her to Wentworth Park I will try and find a couple of easier races for her at the provincials.

“But I think she might have another big race win in her.’’

Lamb though is not resting on his laurels and won a maiden at Maitland on Thursday with promising 22 month old Youngster Tollbar, who scored over 450m in 25.50.

Tollbar is by Cosmic Chief from Lisa’s Tree, a daughter of my family’s 2008 Paws Of Thunder winner One Tree Hill,’’ Lamb added.

“I have a few maiden brothers to Tollbar at home which have plenty of ability, while Robbie Britton, who trained One Tree Hill for my wife Lisa and I, is training a bitch puppy from the litter named Humming BirdHill.

“She won three of her first four starts at The Meadows in Melbourne.’’

When Mr Wentworth won at Dubbo on Thursday he registered his 20th win, a remarkable achievement for a greyhound which was a gift to owner-trainers Dianne and Geoff Sheather.

The Sheathers, who are based at Young, are obviously dab hands with gift greyhounds as they won a dozen races with Mr Wentworth’s grand-dam Amy’s Daughter, another giveaway.

“Apart from winning 12 races in the bush Amy’s Daughter was beaten a nose at Wentworth-park">Wentworth Park,’’ Dianne said.

“And when we bred from her we got Amy’s History, who was a Wentworth-park">Wentworth Park winner.

“Geoff and I reached a stage where we didn’t want to breed another litter so we gave Amy’s History to breeder Allan Lang in exchange for a pup from each of her subsequent litters.

“Mr Wentworth was one of her offspring and while he wasn’t one we were originally given, we got him after he was unplaced at his first two starts.

“His trainer didn’t think he was much good so Allan Lang asked us if we wanted to take him home and we accepted.

“He has been a terrific money-spinner for us and late last year made the pace Before finishing third in a race at Wentworth-park">Wentworth Park.

“Geoff and I have had greyhounds together for 46 years but he has had them even longer, he grew up with them as a kid while I came from a harness racing family.’’

Fay and Noel Trowbridge are in no hurry to test Hail Storming over 520m at Wentworth-park">Wentworth Park despite the dog’s fifth win in eight starts at Maitland on Thursday.

Hail Storming, who has already been successful in fast time over 280m at Wentworth-park">Wentworth Park, rocketed over the Maitland 400m trip in a brilliant 22.33.

“I’ve got no doubt he will run 520 metres,’’ Noel, whose wife Fay owns and trains the dog, said.

“But we plan to take him through his grades on the provincial circuit Before stepping him up to 520 metres at Wentworth-park">Wentworth Park.’’

Hail Storming is from the first litter whelped by the Trowbridges’ smart front-running bitch Hail Queenie, who won eight races and was runner-up over 520m at Wentworth-park">Wentworth Park.

“When he was attempting to put his stud dog Lochinvar Marlow on the map, Kevin Gordon gave Fay and I a free service when Hail Queenie came in season,’’ Noel Trowbridge said.

“Her entire litter can run, including the pups we sold for only $1500 apiece.

“Among them are Gauge This, Gracas King and Black Driftwood.

Gauge This won in 22.60 at Maitland on Thursday after chasing home Gracas King at the same track a week earlier.

“And Black Driftwood, trained at Tamworth by Barry Evans, won over 450m at Maitland in 25.10 as a baby but is currently out of action with a cracked shoulder.

“Hail Queenie’s second litter, now four months old, are by Cosmic Rumble, but because of the success of her first pups the price has gone up to $3000 each, still pretty cheap by my reckoning.’’
