Unbeaten Laverne The One To Beat At Lismore

By Stuart Turner

Impressive newcomer Laverne">Laverne looks a good chance to continue her unbeaten record at Lismore on Tuesday.

The promising chaser jumps from box four in the night’s second race, the Ladbrokes Visa Card Stakes (420m), aiming to make it four wins from four.

Laverne, trained and owned by stalwart racing couple Frank and Edith Hancock, already looks a potential 2015 star.

She claimed last month’s $20,000-to-the-winner Northern Rivers Vet K9 Reproduction Maiden Classic on her second outing before adding another win from box three just before Christmas.

Laverne’s early appearances have been promising and she certainly has the pedigree to succeed.

Sire Where’s Pedro, a son of racing great Brett Lee, won 15 of his 22 races in a short but successful career.

Mother Pretty Malaika, also from the Hancock’s kennels, won more than 40 races in her distinguished life on the track.

The chaser’s best racing time of 23.95 for the distance is the fastest here and there does not look much to worry her in this race.

The Hancocks, who work out of Spring Grove in the NSW Northern Rivers, usually bring through at least one very handy pup every year and Laverne looks their latest standout.

Meanwhile, in other action at Lismore, Bokarm Ava will aim to maintain her superb form in the night’s seventh race.

Bob Merillo’s chaser has won five in a row and looks well drawn in box three to make it six.

Lee Wylie’s I’m A Believer won last start in a smart time and looks a decent chance jumping from box sixth in the night’s fifth race.

Other strong chances here include Puma Cloud (race nine), who should provide some value and Go Gallon, who looks the form chaser in race 10.
