Calla Boom Ready To Explode At Nowra

By Stuart Turner

An intriguing maiden final and a stern test for super sprinter-turned-stayer Bessy Boo are among  the highlights of a cracking meeting at Nowra on Tuesday.

The night’s feature race is race three, the $5000-to-the-winner Pinebowl Maiden Series Christmas Final (520m) and this looks an absolute cracker.

John Callaughan enjoyed success in the recent $2000-to-the-winner Puppy Classic at Nowra with Calla Blackie and he could secure another win here with Calla Boom.

This daughter of Take The Kitty x Our Layla has made a solid start to her career and looks well drawn in box seven.

She has plenty inside her but should have the pace to cross well and take this one.

Kennelmate Springvale Harry (box eight) looks a notch below Calla Boom but has been running well recently and is worth considering.

Super Sutro (box three) also has claims for trainers Christine and Alan Proctor in what is an intriguing final.

Meanwhile, star of the Proctor kennel, Bessy Boo (pictured), will have his hands full in the Bechini and Associates Stayers Stakes (630m).

This year’s Group 1 Peter Mosman Classic winner is being primed for a step up to the stayer ranks in 2015 and won well here in last week’s heats.

He will likely start favourite from box six but could face a stern challenge from Neville Brown’s Serena Nimbus (box three).

This exciting newcomer has won five from eight so far, including a strong 42.42 run over 717m at Richmond last start on December 10.

Recent Dapto Puppy Classic finalist Stilton Lucky goes in box seven in the night’s second race.

He will face a tough challenge from kennelmate Stilton Gold in box one.

This improving pup looks ideally drawn, is solid at the track and should be too strong here.

Race four looks like a terrific contest between the Frances Goodwin-trained pair Fancy Fran (box two) and Oceania in box four.

Oceania is a highly promising newcomer but unbeaten Fancy Fran has won her first three starts and looks to have the edge on her kennelmate here.

Race six is another cracker with Paua Explosion (box three) and Velvet Flame in box two expected to challenge for honours.

The former looks to be back in the groove after being sidelined for several weeks but Velvet Flame won impressively here last start and may just have the edge again from the inside.
