Rodney Aiming To Double Up At Wentworth Park

By Jeff Collerson

Blacktown trainer Rodney O’Brien has a great chance of landing his first winning Wentworth Park double with litter brother and sister Black Lagoon and Rubelly Magic on Saturday night.

Black Lagoon is ideally drawn in box one in the Rapidvite Stakes while Rubelly Magic has box four in the Ladbrokes Bitches Only Final.

While Rubelly Magic has drawn the squeeze O’Brien is quietly confident of winning with each of his staters.

Rubelly Magic has the same draw she had when she led all the way in her heat and while she doesn’t have the quickest overall time she has the fastest first split and that’s a big plus.

Rubelly Magic had not seen Wentworth Park before her heat run, and Black Lagoon was also having his first look at the track when he finished second to Lukey Chino.

“Black Lagoon had box seven last Friday and is a case for the inside so I’m thrilled to bits he has drawn box one on Saturday.

“He won at his only start from the rails box so if he begins as well as he usually does I expect him to be off and gone at the first turn.

Rubelly Magic and Black Lagoon both pulled up perfectly after their races last week and I’m planning to give them their chance in the National Futurity and National Derby at Wentworth Park late next month.’’

Fantastic Sid has not raced since tearing a hind leg muscle at Maitland on November 13 but is trialling well in preparation for his comeback race in Saturday night’s wentworthpark.com.au Stakes.

“I gave him a box to box hit-out at Wentworth Park and he ran 17.86sec to the back which is a smart run,’’ trainer Jason Fletcher said.

“Then he had a post-to-post slip at Dapto on Monday and he clocked 24.20 which is very good.

“I suppose the final 40 metres will be his main worry because he lacks race fitness.

“Apart from that the draw looks good as long as Fantastic Sid can dodge Magic Dream at the start.

“My dog has box three and Magic Dream has drawn two and when she drew box two at Wenty on December 6 she moved to the right at the start.

“So my fellow will need to be on his toes to get a clear run.’’

The immensely talented Sir Redmond should only need to begin cleanly to break through for his first city win in Saturday night’s Gardens To Wenty final.

Sir Redmond won his heat over 515m at The Gardens in 29.83, scoring by just on eight lengths, while the other heat winner Oxley Axeman took 30.53.

At his most recent Wentworth Park start on December 5 the Brett May-trained Sir Redmond came from last to finish third behind Chasing The Line and Grin To Win in a slick 29.98.

Sir Redmond had box seven in that race and has again drawn wide in box eight on Saturday night.

Kasinda ran the best race of her career when second to Santorini Blue at Wentworth Park last Saturday night and looks Saturday’s best value bet in the petsnacks.cm.au Stakes.

Last Saturday Kasinda had box eight and after a slow start was checked while showing good speed and moving into third place at the first turn.

She is usually a smart beginner and if she steps away cleanly Kasinda can lead throughout on Saturday.
