I'm Pedro Fit And Firing

By Jeff Collerson

I’m Pedro is now back to his best After more than two months on the sidelines and is ready to score his third Wentworth Park win in Friday night’s Bohemia Crystal Stakes.

The sprinter,  who has box three, suffered a badly gashed toe when he finished fourth to Silent Effective at Wentworth Park on September 6.

After that race he could not put his foot to the ground in the catching pen," trainer Sydney Wales said. "The toe was in such a bad state it was a miracle he was able to run fourth.

After a couple of placings at Bulli in November I brought him back to Wentworth Park last week.

“When he was at his absolute best I’m Pedro slipped around Wenty in 24.21 and before last week’s race he clocked 24.33.

“I was concerned he might still be a fraction under-done for the 520m last Saturday but he ran on surprisingly well to finish third to Zipping Willow and Zipping Tank.

“I’m Pedro has been kept nice and fresh this week and all he has had is plenty of walking and a good swim in the pool at fellow trainers Rob and Marien Sullivan’s property.

“I think my dog is raring to go now and box three seems a nice draw for him.’’

Whittaker">Whittaker (pictured) chases his eighth win in 12 starts in Friday night’s It’s A Dog’s Life Stakes but has drawn wide for the first time at Wentworth Park.

The promising sprinter won his only start from box seven and has scored a win from two races out of box eight but trainer Julie Fletcher concedes the outside draw is Wentworth Park is a different proposition.

“It is harder to get across from box eight at Wentworth Park than it is at Dapto,’’ Fletcher said. “But there doesn’t seem to be a lot of pace inside Whittaker.

Providing he begins cleanly he should be okay.

“He is a funny dog in that he can jump smartly one night and miss the kick the next but if he comes out with them and avoids interference he is capable of running home strongly and winning.’’

Spacecraft, who has won five of 10 provincial starts, looks a special to score his first city win in Friday night’s Kara Vague Stakes at Wentworth Park.

At his sole city appearance on November 23 Spacecraft finished a gallant second to Leroy’s Mystery, who had far greater Wentworth Park experience.

And Leroy’s Mystery proved the form by winning again at the Glebe track last week.

Spacecraft railed well and finished strongly when runner-up to Leroy’s Mystery and looks to have a near perfect box two draw on Friday night.

King Sapphire clocked splits of 5.40 and 13.82 before weakening to finish third to Recruitment at Wentworth Park last Saturday night and this consistent front runner in boxed to lead throughout in Friday’s The Divercity Cup.

King Sapphire set up a six lengths lead in the middle stages last Saturday and a drop in class from fourth to fifth grade this week should see him lead throughout for his fourth Wentworth Park win.
