Bargain Buy Strikes It Rich

A $600 purchase has taken out the $75,000 Group 2 Country Motor Company Dapto Puppy Classic (520m) with Bertacious Bee scoring a gutsy victory in the feature event.

Starting from box seven, the George Micallef-trained greyhound began brilliantly and vied for the lead with Spring Bonanza as the field rounded the first turn.

Bertacious Bee then built a strong lead down the back, but the race was by no means over with Magic Earner and Rare Pearl mounting their challenges.

But Bertacious Bee dug deep, maintaining his lead around the final turn and holding to win the $75,000 feature race by 1 1/2 lengths in 29.97.

Magic Earner overcame a troubled start to finish second, while Rare Pearl held off Spring Bonanza in third.

The win was Bertacious Bee's third from 10 starts.

The Dapto Puppy Classic is for greyhounds that were sold at the 2013 Dapto Puppy Auction.

In that auction, Bertacious Bee was purchased for a bargain price $600 and has now won his connections nearly $80,000 in prizemoney

His victory was the second Puppy Classic win for Micallef with the Farmborough Heights trainer winning the 2011 event with No Rules League.

No Rules League was also a cheap purchase, only costing his owners $800 at the 2010 Dapto Puppy Auction.
