Couple Aim To Spread Magic At Goulburn

By Stuart Turner

John and Catherine Mellon are hoping Mellcat Magic can eventually give them another shot at the big time but for now another win at Goulburn on Tuesday will do fine.

The unbeaten sprinter aims to make it three consecutive wins in race four, the Goulburn GBOTA 0-2 Wins Heat (457m).

She is the latest promising sprinter for the Wingello-based owner-trainer couple, whose standout moment was a 2008 NSW Sprint Championship placing with Majestic Puzzle.

Mellcat Magic is a long way from those levels yet but Catherine Mellon said she would love to experience another big Group night.

“It’s an exhilarating feeling,” she said.

“With those Group races you get dressed up for the night – it’s all very exciting.

“I’m hoping to take (Mellcat Magic) into town before Christmas. Fingers crossed she can go well.

“When you get a promising greyhound like this, it’s very exciting.”

This will be Mellcat Magic’s first race at 457m level but she has shown plenty of promise so far.

She has recorded two victories at Goulburn over 350m in solid times and is a versatile greyhound.

Mellcat Magic’s father Magic Sprite finished with 35 wins from 43 races, while her mother Miss Tandur was a solid country performer.

“She can run from the front and comer from behind as well,” Catherine Mellon said.

“Her mother went over 600m and I’m hoping she will do the same one day.”

Her husband has been involved with greyhounds virtually all his life but Catherine was a stranger to the animals.

“I didn’t know anything about greyhounds,” she said. “I suppose I saw them with their muzzles and thought they were bad.

“When you get to know them, though, you fall in love with them.

“I had to adjust but it was something different and exciting.

“A lot of it is learning as you go along but when the greyhounds win it is very satisfying.”

Others to watch at Goulburn on Tuesday include Claretown Bert (race two), race seven’s Sir Prasso and race eight’s Highly Respected.

Look for Bonnie’s Back in race five and race six’s Senorita Escobar to complete the quaddie.

Ten races are on the card and action starts at 3.17pm.
