Richmond Puppy Auction Looks A Stunner

By Stuart Turner

Richmond Race Club General Manager Wayne Billett has only one word to describe this Sunday’s inaugural Globe Memorial Richmond Puppy Classic Auction – “massive”.

A total of 369 lots, which feature some of the country’s most sought after pups, will be on offer at the event.

The auction is likely to gross hundreds of thousands of dollars, as well offering a fascinating look at potential future stars of the track.

Richmond club general manager Billett said it promised to be a “fantastic” event.

“We are expecting 1000 people to come along,” he said.

“I know there’s lots of people who have formed syndicates to buy pups at this event. What better way to get into the sport than this?

 “It’s going to be massive.”

The auction, which will be broadcast live by Sky Racing 2, is open to greyhounds whelped between January 1 and June 30 2014.

Greyhounds sold at the auction will be able to compete in the 2016 Richmond Riches, a race series offering more than $140,000 in prizemoney.

The series will feature a Triple Crown of events catering for greyhounds over distances of 400m, 535m and 618m.

Billett said anticipated highly fancied litters at the auction were likely to include those of Collision x Here’s Hayley, Magic Sprite x Sealin’ The Deal and Where’s Pedro x Unfinished. Three pups out of the 2013 Group 1 Paws of Thunder winner Sheikha (pictured), will also be up for purchase.

Billett said he was expecting people from across Australia and NEW ZEALAND to attend the event.

“We are really pleased with the response we’ve had,” Billett said.

“The depth and quality of the greyhounds on offer looks fantastic.

“I think when we were setting this up some people maybe thought it could not work or that we would not get the numbers, but I think 369 lots shows there is definitely a marketplace for what we are doing here.”

Trade stalls will also be available for anyone looking to pick up a bargain or new equipment.

Participants can still register either beforehand or from 7.30am on the day, with the auction starting at 9am.

Spectators not participating are also welcome.
