Auld Hopes Sprinter Can Show Steel At Gosford

By Stuart Turner

Nathan Auld has big plans for Steel">Steel The Best and he hopes they get further boosted with another win at Gosford tonight.

The exciting sprinter goes in the night’s third race, the Coastal Transport Services Stakes (400m), aiming for a fourth triumph in her first five starts.

After a third-placed finish to track record-breaker Winsome Jacko at Maitland on debut, Steel The Best has been in unbeatable form.

Auld thinks the chaser may eventually reach Group standard and is already eyeing a trip to Wentworth Park soon.

“I think she may have the class to win in the city,” he said. “She’s got that early pace and she’s done everything right so far.

”The owners are keen to see her in the city and I definitely think she has that potential.

“There’s a few races next year that may be suitable, like the (Group 3) Ladies Bracelet, but we’ll see how she steps up.”

Steel The Best has  drawn unfavourably in box four this time around but you would not rule her out on current form.

The sprinter won twice at Richmond before securing another 400m win at Gosford in 22.88 last week.

She was sired by Magic Sprite, who won 10 of his 11 races and is a son of legendary Brett Lee.

Auld only obtained his public trainer licence about six months ago after working for about seven years as a hobby trainer and breeder alongside father Ian.

The Aulds have enjoyed success already from their north-west Sydney base of Rouse Hill, including developing notable sprinter Silent Effective.

“When you breed pups out of one of your brood bitches and see them win, it’s something special,” Auld junior said. “You get a kick out of it.

“Just to see how much effort goes into winning one race is incredible, so to see Steel The Best win three out of four is really satisfying.

“When you get one like her, it makes you jump out of bed in the morning. It’s good to come down to the kennel, open the doors and see her there.

“It’s hard not to get too far ahead – we’ll work her through the grades and hopefully she can progress further."

Auld also has Effective Miss resuming after four months out in race one through injury and likes her chances.

Others to watch at Gosford include 400m star Revlon Babe who goes in race eight.

Seven Jacks (Race 4), Kitchener Rum (race 5) and CEE CEE Quoted (race 10) all look strong as well.
