Phil's Pup More Than Lucky

By Jeff Collerson

Stilton LUCKY became one of the sport’s longest-priced winners at Dapto last Thursday when he won a heat of the Country Motor Company Puppy Classic at $68, but trainer Phil Goodsell didn’t put a cent on him.

“I gave him a chance but I don’t bet, simple as that,’’ Goodsell said.

“I told a couple of blokes who work for me the dog had a hope and as far as I know they were still celebrating 24 hours after the race.

LUCKY">Stilton LUCKY only ran 30.36 but he is improving all the time and the way he is going he might get down to 30 seconds flat at Dapto.

“I train him for Jason Bolwell, who also owns my top notch sprinter Stilton Blue, and it’s great to see Jason get a semi-finalist in a group race like this because he pours a lot of money into the sport.

“Unfortunately he couldn’t be at Dapto to see LUCKY">Stilton LUCKY win because he has been working in Melbourne, where he is the site foreman for a company which operates cranes.

LUCKY">Stilton LUCKY had been working well leading up to Thursday’s race but he had box seven and he is desperate for the fence.

“The dog has been very slow to mature and is a bad kennel dog. He barks non-stop when he is kennelled.’’

Todd Hattam, a horse doctor who specialises in caring for the teeth of equines, owns a Country Motor Company Puppy Classic semi-finalist following Alderley Reform’s tenacious 30.14 upset win over favoured Frattini in heat eight at Dapto.

Hattam bought Alderley Reform from his breeders, Lorraine and Peter Perrin, who raced the dog’s outstanding dam Bananarama.

Hattam left Alderley Reform with the Perrins to train but after the dog won just one of his first 10 provincial starts in NSW he was despatched to South Australia.

“My husband Peter thought the opposition would be a bit weaker over there and we sent him to Adelaide trainer Terry Cahalan,’’ Lorraine Perrin said.

Alderley Reform won eight from 10 starts for Terry who sent the dog back to us to contest the Puppy Classic.

“We are really pleased because our own greyhound Magic Rama, and Aerial Blitz, who is trained in Victoria by Justin Booker, are from the same litter and they have also made it through to the Puppy Classic semi-finals.

Alderley Reform was the last of his litter to be sold and he is a real handful at times. It’s as if he is ready to explode.

“When we get him out of his kennel he jumps up onto a table waiting to get treatment from the ultrasonic machine.

“He might improve a bit on Thursday’s run too because all he had at Dapto before the Classic heats was a hand-slip.’’

Lord Licrick, who has had five starts at Maitland for three wins and two seconds, will head for Bulli after contesting last Thursday’s final of the Maitland Supporters’ Club Juvenile Sprint.

“I like to let young dogs learn the ropes on one turn tracks over 400m before sending them over 520m so after Thursday’s final I will try and win a couple of 400m races at Bulli with him,’’ trainer Robert Green said.

“But I think Lord Licrick will handle tighter tracks like Wentworth Park because he is such a brilliant railer.

“I trained his dam Myron’s Angel, who was very fast early, and when she finished racing I gave her to Lakesland breeder John Maroun on a pups basis.

“From Myron’s Angel’s first litter, to Oaks Road, John gave me two pups, including Lord Licrick, while I also received two pups from her second litter, now 10 months old, which were sired by High Earner.’’
