Big Plans For Zipping Willow And Winsome Prince

By Jeff Collerson

Zipping WILLOW will strive to end 2014 on a high by winning the Group 3 Christmas Gift after enjoying yet another superb victory in her distinguished career.

The queen of NSW sprinting she is not ready to give up her crown just yet with an 18th win in two dozen Wentworth Park starts on Saturday night.

Heats of the 520m Gift will be held on December 6 with the $25,000 to the winner final a week later.

“That looks the ideal race for her and then I’ll probably take her to Gosford for the heats of the Group 2 Woy Woy Poultry Gold Cup on Boxing Day,’’ trainer Jason Mackay said on Saturday.

Zipping WILLOW and arch rival Anything Less staged another thrilling duel in Saturday night’s Rapidvite Blue Paws Stakes (520m), with Mackay’s bitch tearing away with a huge early lead and Anything Less storming home to go under by just over a length.

The win reversed the result from the previous week at Wentworth Park, when Anything Less claimed victory and Zipping WILLOW finished fourth.

This win also took Zipping WILLOW's record to a superb 31 wins from 47 starts.

Meanwhile, boom pup Winsome Prince won’t tackle the Woy Woy Poultry Gold Cup but could be off to Melbourne to contest the Group 1 Silver Chief Classic heats at The Meadows after maintaining his unbeaten record on Friday night at Wentworth Park.

Despite racing wide, Winsome Prince took the lead at the first turn to win at his Wentworth Park debut by 11 lengths and his tally now stands at nine starts for nine wins.

“The Silver Chief heats on December 20 are an option but I don’t like to plan too far ahead because when you do that you get disappointed,’’ John Finn, whose wife Minnie trains Winsome Prince, said post-race.

Winsome Prince likes to run in the middle of the track so I wasn’t surprised when he got wide for much of tonight’s race.’’

Winsome Prince was widely expected to run blistering time but Friday’s track was heavily watered due to the extreme temperatures during the day and the dog’s time of 30.01 was clearly the best of the night.
