Miata's Latest Pups Looking Good

By Stuart Turner

It is a little early to say if they will follow in their mother’s remarkable footsteps but the early signs are good for Miata">Miata’s latest litter.

The former double Australian Greyhound of the Year winner (pictured) and much-loved track star, who won 42 of 51 races and earned $715,000 in her remarkable career, recently became a mother to ten new pups.

The litter was sired by Turanza Bale, the father of the star sprinter-turned-stayer Xylia Allen.

Miata’s trainer and co-owner Paul Stuart said he hoped there were one or two champs among the newcomers.

“It’s a bit early days to tell yet,” he said with a laugh.

“They are doing everything right that you can see in them.

“It won’t be too long before we send them out and then the fun starts.”

The pups will certainly have to work hard to match their mother’s glorious achievements.

Miata’s phenomenal racing career included setting nine track records at six courses in four different states.

Among the WA-based  greyhound’s incredible list of victories was the 2012 Group 1 Association Cup at Wentworth Park.

Turanza Bale enjoyed 22 wins from 78 starts in a distinguished racing career for Victorian trainer Graeme Bate.

He also fathered Grigorieva Bale, the 2013 Group 1 Golden Easter Egg winner, with Kingston Bale.

Ironically, these pups were whelped shortly before Xylia Allen herself was retired for breeding by owner Paul Wheeler.

Seven pups from a litter born to Miata on Melbourne Cup day last year to sire Barcia Bale are currently enjoying their racing education with different trainers.

“They are looking well and it’s just a matter of waiting a little longer with them now,” Stuart, who kept two of the pups, said.

Miata looks gold as gold and has handled this litter a lot better this time.

“Fingers crossed they all stay healthy.”

Meanwhile, Miata's superb racing career was further recognised on Saturday night when she was inducted into the WA Racing Hall of Fame.

Others to be recognised included star galloper Scenic Blast, popular trainers Gary Hall Snr and Neville Parnham and jockey Paul Harvey.
