Bertacious Bee Can Show His Sting At Dapto

By Stuart Turner

Bertacious Bee looks drawn well to star in this Thursday’s heats of the Group 2 Country Motor Company Dapto Puppy Classic (520m).

The sprinter will start from box seven in the day’s fifth race, the fourth of eight heats which will feature some highly promising pups.

Bertacious Bee has enjoyed a bright start to his racing career and already shone at Dapto, having placed on each of his four previous visits.

Trainer George Micallef said the draw held no fears for his chaser either.

“That’s what he wanted,” Micallef said. “He’s better on the outside – it suits him down to the ground.

“He’s a bit clumsy and is also a slow beginner. He just lacks that pace at the moment to get around them.

“At the end of the day it’s down to luck I think but if he keeps getting the outside draws, then he’s got a chance.”

Bertacious Bee is a son of sire Bekim Bale, who enjoyed a brief but successful career, and dam It’s Happy Hour.

She was a solid city-class greyhound and Bertacious Bee looks like he could follow in those footsteps.

He has won two and placed on four of his seven starts so far, including an impressive 29.91 effort over the 520m at Dapto earlier this month.

The race, which continues with semi-finals next Thursday before the final on Thursday, December 4, is open to greyhounds sold through the 2013 Dapto Puppy Auction.

Micallef, who works out of the Wollongong suburb of Farmborough Heights, enjoyed a memorable victory in the 2011 Classic with No Rules League.

She was bought at the auctions for just $800 at the 2010 Puppy Auction but went on to snare the $75,000 top prize.

“She was such a timid greyhound,” Micallef said. “I eventually got her used to people and she won the big one.

“He is such a quiet dog (as well). He is so quiet in the kennels and he loves the kids.

“It would be great to win this one again.”

Among the greyhounds featuring in the eight heats are Barcelona Star (heat one), promising Christine Oldfield-pair Sokyo and Frattini (heats two and eight respectively) and Queenslander Spring Bonanza in heat seven.
