Young Stars Final Looks A Belter

By Stuart Turner

There’s only one word to describe this year’s Group 3 Greyhounds WA Young Stars Classic (530m) – mouth-watering.

Star newcomers Tureaud">Tureaud and Quartz Bale are among six greyhounds from the Paul Stuart kennel lining up for Saturday night’s $25,000-to-the-winner final, with both sprinters boasting fine reputations.

The exciting pair, who have won 15 of their combined 16 starts so far, jump from boxes four and seven respectively in the final.

Stuart, the trainer of legendary champion Miata, said the box draw had been kinder to Tureaud but it was tough to pick a potential winner between the pair.

“I haven’t seen the prices yet,” he said with a grin.

Tureaud has drawn well. I think both he and Starlight Jack (in box one) are my better chances.

Quartz Bale may find it tough. He has four or five greyhounds underneath him who can run 5.60 to the first turn.

“If Tureaud gets a clean start, he could be hard to stop.”

Tureaud has won seven of his first eight starts, with a 530m best time so far of 30.14.

Quartz Bale is eight from eight and motored round last week’s heat in 30.17.

He broke the 405m track record at Mandurah last month in 22.22 and is shaping up very nicely.

“He is not the best of beginners but has unbelievable speed,” Stuart said.

“He was a big crasher early in his career but has got stronger and seems to be learning with every race.

“Both he and Tureaud are doing everything right at this stage.

“They both have different styles of racing (and) I can’t really say who will be better.”

Stuart said he had originally hoped to bring the pair to Wentworth Park for the recent Group 1 Ladbrokes Vic Peters Classic, but those plans were scuppered by an injury to Tureaud.

He said both are possible for next year’s Group 1 Golden Easter Egg at the Sydney track.

The race is the fifth of 10 at Cannington on Saturday.

Others to watch on the night include Oopsy (race three), and Proven Will in race four.
