Rupert Starting To Bear Fruit For Bruce

By Stuart Turner

Rupert">Rupert drove trainer Bruce Linnan to despair with his lack of success but now the chaser is flying and looking good for Thursday's Ipswich meeting.

The sprinter jumps from box three in the meeting's sixth race, the McNamara and Associates Stakes (520m), aiming to continue his impressive recent run.

After a barren spell where he won only two of 25 starts stretching back to May this year, Rupert has won three and placed on two of his last five starts.

Linnan is delighted with his charge's reversal of fortunes and reckons he could be on for another win here.

"We knew he had the talent," he said. "That's why we persevered with him.

"I was trying everything, but from July to September it was shocking.

"The only thing I did differently was using a lure on the straight track at home. I don’t like doing that all the time but had two or three weeks of that (and) the penny seems to have dropped.

"You can't be too confident (but) I think he will go well on Thursday night."

Last Thursday's victory took Rupert's record to six wins and eight placings from 32 starts.

He has virtually no experience from box three, where he starts from here, but on current form will be hard to stop.

"Last week he was five lengths off at one stage," Linnan said. "I was just hoping he could get a place but his run home time was good.

"That was the first indication that he is chasing fair dinkum now.

"It's great because you go to the races now thinking you have got a chance, rather than hoping."

Linnan combines training working as a broccolini farmer in Lake Clarendon, south-east Queensland.

He has been a trainer for about nine years and also breeds and owns greyhounds alongside wife Marie.

His best achievement so far was winning the 2012 Queensland National Sprint Championships with Tarlie's Angel.

"In summer it's hard work," Linnan said. "You have to be up and about with the dogs at 4am or else it's too hot.

"I like the challenge of winning races and that buzz you get.

"We breed our own greyhounds and when you see them growing as pups, getting them on the track and winning, it's a lovely feeling."

Others to watch at Ipswich include Spring Bonanza (race seven), who has compiled seven wins from 12 starts.

Abby's Fantasy (race five) and race eight's Kidatee Croc also look contenders.
