Sydney Smiling Again As Im Pedro Returns

By Stuart Turner

Sydney Wales was as low as they come when I’m Pedro was injured but now his spirits are soaring again ahead of tonight’s Bulli meeting.

The chaser will enjoy his first outing in more than two months when he jumps from box four in the meeting’s second race, the Southern Engine Reconditioning Stakes (400m).

I’m Pedro was emerging as one of the most exciting pups around before badly cutting a toe last start at Wentworth Park.

Wales admitted he was devastated by the injury to his charge, who provided the owner/trainer with his first Wentworth Park victory earlier this year, and is expecting big things on his return.

“I nearly cried when I saw him injured,” Wales said.

“He is a heavy dog and puts his guts into every race.

“I know it might sound strange after he’s been out for two months but I really expect him to ping the lids.”

I’m Pedro had built a solid record for Wales before his ill-fated last outing, recording eight wins and seven placings from 18 starts.

He won on his 520m debuts at both Dapto and Nowra (clocking 30.06 and 30.01 respectively) and also has a best of 29.75 for the distance at Wentworth Park.

I’m Pedro was being targeted for a potential crack at this summer’s Group races before requiring several stitches in his toe injury.

“He was in there for a while (after the race) getting stitched up,” Wales said. “The vet at Wentworth Park did a brilliant job.

“You hate seeing that with any greyhound but when it’s your own it’s tough to deal with.”

I’m Pedro has returned to fitness and has trialled well pre-race at Thirlmere.

The sprinter has won one and placed twice on his three visits to Bulli and Wales is hoping he can repeat those performances tonight.

“He bolted home in his first race at Dapto and did the same at Nowra,” Wales said. “He tries so hard and you just want to see him do well.

“He is a 520m greyhound at Wentworth Park and Richmond but I think he will need another two or three races yet over the 400m.

“This is a hard race (but) I really hope he wins and pulls up unscathed.”

Also in action at Bulli are Melina Finn’s exciting pair Winsome Mission (race five) and recent Maitland record-breaker Winsome Jacko, who goes in race seven.

Foxy Nakita (race three) and race six's Fantastic Pete look strong contenders.

Ten races are on the card and action starts at 7.07pm.
