Charlie Nutter Helping Jimmy Bounce Back

By Jeff Collerson

Jimmy McGlinn has battled serious serious illnesses for the past four years but the 83-year-old, who has been training greyhounds for almost 62 years, bounced back to win with Charlie Nutter at Maitland on Thursday.

Having her sixth start since entering Jimmy’s kennels, Charlie Nutter scored her second win for the veteran trainer with her 32.45 victory over 565m.

“She’ll now go back to Maitland and then I plan to take her to Wentworth Park for a couple of hand-slips to see how she handles that track,’’ McGlinn said.

“Charlie Nutter is from the next litter to Bob McColm’s great sprinter Mr Clydesdale and she has been a problem greyhound but seems to be putting it together now.

“At Maitland on Thursday she had box eight and that is where she wants to be drawn.

“In the past few years I’ve beaten prostate cancer, a heart attack and bowel cancer and my doctor is happy with me now.

“My only problem is I don’t have the stamina I once had but a mate of mine said that was probably due to an affliction called d.o.b.

“When I asked him what that was, he answered ‘date of birth’!"

Calamity Trigger can lay claim to being Sydney’s most versatile greyhound after completing a rare, if not unique quartet of wins, when he scored over 659m at Bulli last Wednesday.

The Michael Eberand-trained dog, owned by his breeder Tony Driver, has now won over all four Bulli distances.

Earlier in his career Calamity Trigger clocked fast times of 22.57 and 22.60 winning over 400m before posting a slick 26.39 in a 472m event and then nippy figures of 28.87 and 28.91 in a pair of 515m Bulli victories.

Calamity Trigger ran a tidy 38.35 at his long distance debut on Wednesday, and with the track set to introduce a 608m start Michael Eberand is hopeful his greyhound can add a win over that trip to his tally.

“It’s great to see Calamity Trigger going so well because Tony, who runs his own business, has had many greyhounds over the years without much success,’’ Eberand said.

“I’ll now try Calamity Trigger over 720m at Wentworth Park. While I didn’t think he once had the stamina for that distance he seems to be getting to the line more strongly these days."

Calamity Trigger, who has won twice over 520m at Wentworth Park and has earned $22,500 in prizemoney, turned three in September.

Cindeen Shelby earned $443,000 and won seven Group races for owner Deen Parkinson but he believes her third litter, sired by Cosmic Rumble in May, 2012, are the best she has produced since retirement.

Deen has concentrated on breeding since Cindeen Shelby quit racing but has made a successful return to the training ranks with her son Shelby Thunder, who won a 450m maiden at Maitland on Thursday in a smart 25.30.

Shelby Thunder had trialled 25.20 at Maitland so I expected him to win and I think he will run 520m when I get him to Wentworth Park,’’ Parkinson said.

“At his first trial at The Gardens he failed to handle the track but he went nicely at his second trial there so I’ll need to give him a couple of looks at Wenty before racing him in town.

“Cindeen Shelby’s first two litters, to Brett Lee and Where’s Pedro, were handy, but the Cosmic Rumbles are the best and Shelby Thunder’s litter sister Jungle Junction has won a Group 2 race at Ipswich for trainer Reg Kay.

“Mick Murray also trains a couple of smart pups from the litter, Sandy Freckle and Mean Mr Mustard, while her fourth litter, by College Causeway, includes Mr Emgrand, which has won races for Luke Azzopardi.

“Cindeen Shelby’s fifth litter, by Magic Sprite, are nearly six months old and these days she lives a life of luxury on the lounge at my home.

“But Cindeen Shelby has to share the lounge with her mum, Proper Shelby, who was the first greyhound I owned and won races when trained by Adele Powell.’’
