Sheridon Aiming For More Sweet Success At Ipswich

By Stuart Turner

Sheridon">Sheridon was a tearaway in the past but now he has grown up he looks ready for another win at Ipswich on Thursday.

The track specialist goes for a third consecutive victory when he jumps from box eight in the Rosewood and District Community Bank Stakes (520m).

A son of notable sire Velocette, Sheridon’s recent successful run has taken his career record to 11 wins from 33 starts.

He has been a real handful at times for owner/trainer Gary Palmer but the sprinter looks to have settled into the winning groove now.

“He was a big baby for a while,” Palmer said. “The whole litter was like that.

“If you let another dog work before him he will pull the kennel down.  He’s ripped up his mattress and his sheets plenty of times.

“He has calmed down a bit now and he is doing well.”

Sheridon loves his trips to the Queensland track, having placed on four of his five previous visits to Ipswich.

Box eight also suits as he has only failed to place once in seven runs from the outside.

“He loves the outside,” Palmer said. “He’s a big dog with long legs so these big tracks suit him.

“He wasn’t great to start with and I had my doubts about him, but now we’ve got him going it’s brilliant.”

Palmer has been training intermittently for about 20 years and is assisted by his partner, Valerie  Vickery.

Tweed-based Palmer first started training After being injured in a work accident, which restricted his mobility.

His father had trained greyhounds and Palmer junior decided to give the sport a go as well.

After my accident, the doctors told me to do a bit of walking,” the 62-year-old said. “I needed the exercise, so I bought a couple of greyhounds.

“I’ve absolutely loved it - It’s been good fun.

“They are all different and I like the challenge of turning greyhounds into winners. It keeps me thinking and active as well.

“I might be a pensioner but I’ll keep doing this for a while yet.”

Others to watch at Ipswich include Byonic Avenger (race three) and Fabulous Storm in race nine.
