Tiny Turner Aims To Stand Tall At Ipswich

By Stuart Turner

Tiny Turner has served up some memorable moments at Ipswich and Ron Ball hopes she can provide some more at Thursday’s meeting.

The experienced sprinter jumps from box one in the UQGA Presidents Trophy (520m) aiming for a 16th win in 57 starts.

Five of those successes have come at Ipswich, including a smart triumph over 520m earlier this month.

There is some tough opposition this time around but trainer Ball said you cannot rule his greyhound out of contention.

“She loves the inside so this draw gives her every chance,” he said.

“She’s not a big greyhound and the tight track there suits her.

“She rails good and they usually find it hard to chase her down.

“She’s not the fastest here but I give her a chance.”

Tiny Turner is a daughter of Made to Size, who enjoyed 21 victories in an illustrious career.

She has not hit the heights of her father but Ball has enjoyed working with the solid sprinter.

“She’s not quite up to the class of Group greyhounds, but she’s a good greyhound,” Ball said.

“If you had ten of her in your kennels you’d be happy as you’d be fairly sure of a cheque.

“I wouldn’t rule her out here.”

Among the field is last year’s Lismore Cup winner Regal Lauryn (box two) and Velocity Zoe, who has been racing well since returning in September from a seven-month layoff.

She starts from box eight.

Ball is one of the most recognisable faces on the national greyhound circuit, having been training for more than 50 years.

A Racing Queensland Hall of Famer, the 72-year-old  has enjoyed a string of successes, including training double National Distance winner Boronia Blossom  and National Sprint victors Flying Amy and Metz Magic.

“These are memories you don’t forget,” Ball said.  “I would do it all again if I could.

“You get your bad moments, but when you have a greyhound that’s been injured, you get them back on the track and back to their best, that makes it worthwhile for me.

“It gets a bit hectic sometimes but I still get a kick out of it.”

Last Friday’s Group 2 Lismore Workers Club Cup winner Yogi Blue goes in race eight.

Lismore Cup runner-up Bill’s Fantasy is in race seven.

Promising Fabulous Storm looks well drawn to take out race three.

Ten races are on the card at Ipswich and action starts at 6.43pm (AEDT).
