Death Cloud Reaches For The Skies At Goulburn

By Stuart Turner

Death Cloud has really hit his straps in recent weeks and aims for more success at Goulburn today.

William O'Neil's improving sprinter goes for a third consecutive win when he jumps from box four in the Classicbet Sprint (350m).

A pacy field lies in wait but Death Cloud has a solid seven victories and five other placings from 19 starts to his name.

He enjoys his trips to the Southern Highlands track and owner/trainer O’Neil thinks he could be successful here too.

“I would rather have box four than the inside at Goulburn any day,” he said. “In the four you can cut straight into the turn.

“I think (Death Cloud) will eventually over the 500 (metres) and I’m hoping he will be capable of going to the city soon."

Death Cloud's latest win came at Richmond earlier this month when he posted a smart 22.61 to win over 400m.

He went 19.91 while winning at Goulburn last month and has enjoyed two wins from four trips to Goulburn.

A son of notable sire Collision, Death Cloud has won three of his last five and placed every time.

O’Neil has only been training the chaser for about 10 weeks but they seem a great partnership.

"He just seems to have come on in leaps and bounds," O'Neil said.

"He is a good little dog to work with and I hope we can have a more succes with him."

Jodie Lord's Gotta Plan (box three) has won back-to-back races and should provide strong opposition today.

When it comes to dedication to his greyhounds, O’Neil takes some beating.

O'Neil, who works out of ORANGE in the NSW Central West, has been training greyhounds for most of the last 40 years.

Over the years the 58-year-old and his family have helped develop some smart greyhounds, including 2012 Group 1 Macro Meats Sapphire Crown winner Peggy May.

O’Neil first got hooked watching the greyhounds as a young lad with his mates and he has still got the bug now.

“Whether it’s at Goulburn, Richmond or Coonamble, I love to win a race," he said. "I love seeing my greyhounds win.

“I’ve rode them home for 40 years and I will keep doing so until I go to the coffin."

One-turn track specialist Natural Player looks a strong contender for race six, while Jason Fletcher’s in-from Fantastic Pete looks good for race three.

Other notables at Goulburn include Ronray Spirit (race 7), Tappo Osteria in race eight and race nine’s Unleash Hell.

Ten races are on the card and action starts at 3.10pm.
