Cyclone Simone Aims To Storm Wentworth Park Again

By Stuart Turner

Cyclone Simone may have a Group win in her but Majella Ferguson is hoping the sprinter-come-stayer can enjoy more success at Wentworth Park first.

The consistent campaigner aims to make it 20 wins from 40 starts when she jumps from box five in the Macro Meats Gourmet Stakes (520m), race six at tonight’s meeting.

Cyclone Simone has her work cut out, having drawn awkwardly and facing a tough field including in-form Xtreme Knocka.

Having won in fine style at Wentworth Park on Friday night, though, seeing off rivals including this year’s Canberra Cup finalist Father Skeeta, trainer Ferguson is hopeful of a second win in 72 hours for her charge.

“She has been flying,” Ferguson said. “We are ecstatic with how she’s going.

“We wouldn’t normally race her again in such a short time and this is a hard race, but she has been going so well.

“I don’t think box five it will worry her.  She’s had a lot of success from the five in the past so it doesn’t seem to worry her being in the middle.”

Cyclone Simone has been in great form since dropping back from the longer distances to 520m.

Friday night’s win was her third in a row – all at Wentworth Park over the 520m.

The versatile greyhound was a finalist in this year’s NSW Nationals Distance championship and has won at various distances between 535m-720m.

Ferguson said a crack at the forthcoming Group 1 Hume Cup (600m) at The Meadows was one possibility.

“She has won two or three races at different tracks over different distances, which is phenomenal,” Ferguson said.

“She’s maybe a little old for Group races now but we’ll have a look around for possible races.

“She’s the first greyhound the owners have had, so I’m delighted they’ve had some success with her.

“We’ve had a good run with her (and) she’ll certainly make a good brood bitch when she retires.”

Cyclone Simone again faces tough opposition tonight, headed by Xtreme Knocka in box eight.

Jason Fletcher’s fast-improving sprinter maintained his excellent run with another win at Bulli last week – his fifth in sixth starts.

Recent Group 1 Dapto Sportingbet Megastar runner-up Ritza Hattie (pictured, green rug) has a run in race eight.

This year'as Group 3 Ambrosoli winner has been in good form since returning from four months on the sidelines last month.

Other notables to watch at Wentworth Park include Usaine in race four and Karma Connie (race nine).
