Livewire Wussell Aims To Star At The Gardens

By Stuart Turner

Plenty of attention will be on Avondale Storm at Unibet Gardens on Saturday but Brett Tooth is hoping his livewire Wussell">Wussell can also star.

The promising newcomer goes from box three in the Central Security Services Stakes (400m) aiming for a third victory in his opening 10 starts.

Wussell has certainly shown his ability, clocking a best of 22.58 for the distance at Maitland and notching two triumphs in handy company.

Trainer Tooth said the greyhound is one to watch but unfortunately is still learning how to race.

“He tends to crash left as soon as they come out of the boxes,” Tooth said. “He is desperate for the rail.

“I have boxes at home so I’m trying to teach him to come out straight, but it’s a work in progress.

“He is an excitable dog with a lot of early pace, but he needs some work.”

With his handy early speed and decent record, Wussell should prove the best here, although Flyin’ Finley (box seven) has been going well recently.

“If he can get to the lead early, he has a chance,” Tooth said.

“I think he’s limited to 400m at the moment, but if he learns more about racing then he may move up.”

The race is the sixth of the night.

Tooth combines training with working as an assistant at the Broadmeadow railway station near Newcastle.

The 44-year-old can often be found swapping racing tips with customers while doling out their tickets.

“A few of them do come up to the window and chat about greyhounds,” he said with a smile.

“It can be hard. Some days I am up at 3am and start work at 4am.

“Without my wife Paula and my daughter KEISHA, I wouldn’t be able to do it. They are wonderful.

“I just like the challenge of getting a dog, building them up and getting the best out of them.”

Avondale Storm is another highly promising greyhound from the kennels of trainer Beau Hedley, who is currently enjoying notable success.

The newcomer’s littermate Avondale Al smashed the 515m record at Gosford this week and is among NSW racing's hottest properties.

Avondale Storm won impressively on debut over 450m at Maitland last month and also trialled well.

He goes from box five in the meeting’s third race, the Woy Woy Poultry Stakes (515m).

Others to watch at Unibet Gardens on Saturday include My Delilah and Big Dale.

Ten races are on the card and action starts at 5.44pm.
