Ray's Goulburn Hopes Looking Bonny

By Stuart Turner

Some people look forward to putting their feet up in retirement but Ray Webster is doing anything but.

The Wollondilly-based trainer, who has Bridgwater Bonny going in the Classicbet Sprint (350m) at Goulburn on Tuesday, became involved with the sport about 14 years ago.

He and his wife Sharon have enjoyed some notable success in their racing career so far, including winning the 2013 $25,000-to-the-winner Group 3 Ladies Bracelet with Lagoon Lowanna.

The 67-year-old currently helps oversee about 12 greyhounds and is loving his time in the sport.

“I wouldn’t have changed anything,” he said. “Life has been good to me.

“I like the people that are involved in the sport. I have made some good friends.

“I like the challenge the sports presents and getting a winner, whether it’s at Goulburn or Wentworth Park.

“Winning the Ladies Bracelet was a big thrill and it’s been a good ride so far.

“I think when you retire you’ve got to have a passion and this is mine.”

Bridgwater Bonny is among a crop of potentially smart young greyhounds coming through the Websters’ kennels.

She secured a maiden win over 400m at Bulli earlier this month in a smart 22.95.

Although she will have to contend with an unfavourable draw in box six, Webster said his charge looks good for another win.

“She doesn’t mind the wide boxes,” he said. “She won from box seven at Bulli and I think she can handle it.

“She’s usually a quiet dog, but when she knows she’s going racing she gets on her toes.

“Hopefully she can up to two turns soon and have a go at the 520m.

“I think if she’s keeps improving then she’s got a nice future.”

The race is the fifth of 10 on the card at Goulburn.

Other notables in action includeNatural Player, who was unusually disappointing in finishing seventh at Maitland last time out.

He has 22 wins from 33 starts and is usually a master over the shorter distances.

Here’s Archie in race three, Senorita Escobar (race four) and Fantastic Pete in the ninth are all worth considering.Racing starts at 2.51pm.
