Queensland Trip Likely For Exciting Can Of

By Stuart Turner

Can Of is now being primed for a potential  trip north for Group success after rediscovering the winning feeling for Beau Hedley.

The exciting sprinter recorded a sixth win in 12 starts in the tab.com.au Stakes (520m) at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

It was a welcome triumph for Hedley (pictured), whose greyhound was having a second start since a three-month injury lay-off over the winter.

The 2013 NSW Young Person of the Year said he is now aiming his greyhound, who finished fifth at Maitland on his return last month, for a trip to Queensland.

“It’s definitely a great relief to see him back and winning,” Hedley said post-race.

“It was mainly a confidence-boosting run after the run at Maitland.

“He went 29.80 tonight which is nothing to laugh at, especially as I don’t think the track was super fast.

“Depending how he pulls up, there’s a couple of races at Albion Park we may look at now.”

The Gold Coast Cup (520m), which starts with heats on October 2, is a possible target for Can Of.

The greyhound was one of NSW's most exciting prospects before injury struck, securing four consecutive victories and going 29.47 over the 520m at Wentworth Park.

Hedley is now concentrating on Gosford on Tuesday night, where he has Avondale Al going in the night’s third race.

The “promising” debutant has already trialled well at Maitland and could be his next star.

Another of Hedley’s novice pups flying newcomers, Medusa’s Me Mum,  enjoyed a third win in her first three starts at Wentworth Park on Friday night.

The promising novice has gone sub-30 seconds on all three journeys so far and Hedley said his success meant a lot to him.

“She’s very good,” he said. “She’s done everything right so far.

“The owner lost her partner about eight weeks ago, so it’s lovely the dog is winning for her.

“I’m hoping some of these young dogs will be ready for the Vic Peters Classic. It would be great to have three or four in that.”

The Group 1 race at Wentworth Park has $75,000 to the winner and starts with heats on October 18.

Other notables at Gosford include in-form Cosmic Halo in the 10th and recent Group 3 Laurie Healion Memorial Maiden winner Lightest Touch, who goes the sixth.

Action starts at 6.55pm.
