Young Has A Vision For Derby Triumph

By Stuart Turner

Iva Vision faces a tough task in Thursday’s Group 3  Schweppes SA Derby Final (515m) at Angle Park but he has the brainpower to win.

That is the verdict from owner/trainer Peter Young ahead of what looks an exciting race at the Adelaide track.

Among a handy looking field is the remarkable Aston Kane, who will be chasing a 15th win in 17 starts.

Young is optimistic his greyhound, who will start from box eight, has the skills to claim the $25,000 top prize.

“We were really, really happy with the draw,” Young said.

“There’s a lot of speed inside him which should help and depending on how they hit the first corner, I think he can keep out of trouble.

“He is a very smart racing dog. Normally he can spot a gap and use the rail – that’s his main advantage.

“He’s also very relaxed – nothing seems to faze him.

“You don’t get too carried away but let’s say we are quietly confident.”

Iva Vision has compiled a decent record of nine wins from his first 14 starts, mostly at 520m level.

He won his heat last Thursday in a decent 29.68 and journeys south again on the back of five triumphs in his last six starts.

“It’s a last shot at a race like this in the age group,” Young said. “It just happened that this race looked right for him.

“We’ll take it race-by-race with him, but we’ll definitely look at taking him to New South Wales at some stage.”

It looks a very strong race, with Aston Kane (box three) aiming to continue is formidable run of form.

Victorian Dyna Alchemist (box four) is a consistent performer, while strong railer Wind Whistler could challenge from box one.

Young has been training about three years after being introduced to the sport by his family.

He has already enjoyed success this year with Visualize It winning the Group 2 Futurity at Albion Park in April and is enjoying the sport.

“Do I regret getting involved?” Young said.  “Never.

“I like dealing with the pups. I like seeing running around the back, feeding them and rearing them.

“I find it more relaxing than anything.

“It’s a big family thing for us. It keeps us together, gives us something to talk about – and something to argue about!

The race is the eighth of 11 on the card at Angle Park, with action starting at 7.14pm.
