Winsome Prince Aims To Reign At Bulli

By Stuart Turner

Winsome Prince means the world to Melinda Finn and he is already repaying her TLC with spectacular success.

The exciting newcomer looks primed to potentially dominate Bulli after his storming victory in the Group 3 Dapto Maiden Classic  (520).

He saw off a tough field highly promising newcomers to take the $25,000 top prize in the race, which has been won by some of Australia's best greyhounds in the past.

Owner-trainer Finn is now planning to give her charge some well-deserved rest before heading to the Illawarra track to continue his education.

"I think he was the youngest greyhound in the series," Finn said. "He has still got a bit of maturing yet.

"We will probably head to Bulli (next week) now for a trial and then race him the week after.

"I think the 500m is his limit at this stage, but we'll aim for the 472m at Bulli for now I think.

"He's one of the quickest pups we've had but you've got to race them."

After wins in both the Maiden heats and semi-finals, Finn's newcomer came home in a handy 30.02

Winsome Prince made light of the tough box draw of six to claim the victory, with a particularly impressive turn of speed down the back straight.

He overcame some testing opposition including Master Shot, who was heavily fancied but could only finish fifth.

"I think it was one of the hardest maidens going," Finn said. "It was one of the best fields I think they've had.

"It was so exciting to see him coming down the straight and win like that.

"He was the only pup in the litter, so he is very special to us."

"When you breed them and do all the hard work with them and they produce a run like that, it's an unbelievable feeling."

Whittaker, who was among the favourites for the Maiden, goes in the third of three South Coast Challenge Sprint Series heats at Bulli on Wednesday night.

Bruce and Julie Fletcher's fledgling sprinter had looked good in the heats and semi-finals but could only finish fourth in the final afetr a bad start.
