Syd Hopes I'm Pedro Can Keep His Name In Lights

By Stuart Turner

Sydney Wales is enjoying his time in the sun with I’m Pedro and hopes there’s more success to come – starting at Wentworth Park this Saturday.

The promising sprinter goes from box eight in the Macro Meats Gourmet Game Stakes (520m) aiming for a ninth win in 18 starts.

Southern Highlands-based Wales only took charge of I’m Pedro by chance but they are proving a successful partnership.

The Impressive chaser made the 74-year-old’s sporting dreams come true with a first ever Wentworth Park win earlier this year and is fast gaining a notable reputation for himself and his modest owner-trainer.

“I’m not keen on talking much (to the media) but I’m happy to do it for the dog,” Wales said. “I love people hearing about him.

“You don’t expect to be talked about – I mean, Syd Wales, who am I – but it’s nice he’s getting some attention.

“The dog is getting the raps and that’s right – he is doing it all, not me.”

Retired Wales only took charge of I’m Pedro by chance after mate Bob Jackson found himself with an unexpected eighth puppy on his hands from sire Dawn’s Memory.

The greyhound has already chalked up decent wins at Bulli, Goulburn, Dapto and Nowra before underlining his promise with victory over 535m at Richmond last week.

I’m Pedro starts from the unfamiliar outside on Saturday but it may not hurt his chances.

“I haven’t had box eight with him but I think it will suit him,” Wales, who works out of the village of Hill Top, said.

“He handles the move across well. It is just a matter of getting a clear run.

"If he gets a clear run he is as good as anyone.

“There is still improvement in him yet (as well).”

Wales had already said he is priming the greyhound for a crack at the forthcoming Group 3 Nowra Spring Puppy Classic.

Meanwhile, trainer Dawn Garrett will be hoping Space Star can continue his 100 per cent record at the Glebe track.

The standout newcomer, who has 10 wins from 14 starts, won on his second appearance at Wentworth Park last Friday.

He will aim to improve his already superb year, which includes breaking track records at Richmond and Gosford, with victory in the Schweppes Distance Challenge (720m).

Other notables going at Wentworth Park this Saturday night include Ritza Raider (race two),  Evil Punk (race five) and jet-heeled starter Premier Mozz (race nine).
