Miner's Moss A Black Top Bolter

By Stuart Turner

As an eager kid, Mathew Reid would dream of greyhound racing glory while helping trainer dad Dennis prepare his dogs.

Now he is chasing the sport’s top prizes too – and he’s in with a chance of landing a pretty big one.

The Old Bonalbo-based trainer has Miner’s Moss going in this Friday’s $40,000-to-the-winner Group 2 Black Top Final (515m) at Unibet Gardens.

After following Dennis into the training game, Reid jnr said he was looking forward to having a crack at the prestigious title.

“This is all I ever wanted to do,” he said. “Ever since I was a kid helping with the dogs, I knew I was going to do this.

“At first I was worried about following in my dad’s footsteps. I just thought I’ll do my best.

“This is the biggest race for me (so far).  I’m looking forward to experiencing the whole night and it would be wonderful if I can win.

“I’m sure dad will be tickled pink if I win (as well).”

Experienced chaser Miner's Moss, who has 25 wins from 57 starts, has been impressive recently and was the fastest qualifier in last Friday’s heats.

He defied the soggy conditions to bolt round in 29.43, relegating race rival Push It into second spot.

The time was even faster than that of Jason MACKAY's remarkable Zipping Willow.

Unfortunately, Miner’s Moss copped an unhelpful box seven draw for the final.

“I would have been more confident with an inside box,” Reid said.

“If he can get out quick and get across, he has a chance.”

Mathew had big shoes to follow in Dennis, whose achievements included winning the 1988 National Derby with Clover Chief, the 1989 Brisbane Cup with Golden Fox and the 1986 Association Cup with Clover Park.

Reid jnr said he enjoyed the sport, even if it could be demanding.

“You’ve got be there for the dogs morning, noon and night,” he said.

“I like working with the dogs. Getting the end result of winning a race is just one part of it.

“When you have a chance of winning a race like this, it’s great.”

Friday night’s  event, which jumps at 7.19pm, is the first leg of Greyhound Racing NSW’s new Thank Dog It’s Friday series.

The scheme will promote the best racing at regional tracks across the state and offers great prizes too.
