Edwards Eyeing Double Twist's Return

By Stuart Turner

Garry Edwards is hoping Double Twist gets the go-ahead to resume racing shortly – and is still eyeing a potential crack at the forthcoming Sportingbet Megastar (520m).

The 2013 NSW Greyhound of the Year has been sidelined after being injured while collecting her 26th win in 46 starts last month.

She was forced out of a possible crack at the Group 2 Black Top (515m) at Unibet Gardens while recovering.

Edwards is taking his remarkable charge back to the vets this coming Wednesday and is hoping she gets the all-clear to start working again.

“I think it will be right (but) everything is still a little up in the air,” he said.

“The vet said leave it a couple of weeks so we have gone with that advice.

“We’ve brought her back from injury before and back to her best, so this is just another little step.”

Double Twist sustained lacerations to her toe and leg while winning the Schweppes Sprint (520m) at Wentworth Park on July 26.

The injury meant she missed out on the Black Top heats.

Edwards said it was possible he would still have time to prepare Double Twist for next month’s Dapto Megastar.

Last year’s winner of the Group 3 Christmas Gift Nowra Puppy Classic races was among the early expressions of interest for this year’s race.

“That’s still on the cards,” the Nowra trainer said. “It depends on how long she takes to get back to (racing) fitness.

“There’s other good races coming up down the track. You might miss one but you know she’s up to the standard of the Free For Alls.

“We’ll just take it one step at a time with her.”

This year’s Megastar, which starts with heats on September 5, has attracted the usual impressive list of potential entries.

AGRA National Sprint Championship qualifiers Flash Reality, Buckle Up Wes and Bessy Boo are all among the expressions of interest.

Other top greyhounds in contention include Zipping Willow, Tommy Brislane and Push It.

Eight selected greyhounds will contest the heat, with the top three qualifying for the final.

Five greyhounds will be seeded automatically for the final, which takes place on September 12.

The race carries $75,000 to the winner.

The final will be the latest leg of the new Thank Dog It's Friday series,  which sees feature races in regional NSW staged on a Friday night.

As well as showcasing some of the state's NSW greyhound racing, the series offers plenty of other great features as well.
