Ernie Bung Arrow Targeted For Megastar

By Stuart Turner

Comeback kid Ernie Bung Arrow  returns to racing at Gawler on Tuesday as he prepares for a potential crack at the forthcoming Sportingbet Megastar (520m).

The standout chaser, who chalked up an incredible 19 wins from 21 starts but has not raced since January, is among the expressions of interest for the Group 1 race at Dapto.

A fractured wrist and then another injury have kept the South Australian campaigner on the sidelines since then, but after trialling positively he gets a competitive outing in the Gawler Farm Mahinery Stakes PR1 Division (400m).

Current trainer Kim Johnstone said it was hoped the exciting prospect could be fit and flying for a possible run at the Megastar.

“We are cautiously hopeful,” she said.

“It was devastating for everyone when he got the (initial) injury and devastating when he did the shoulder injury.

“He trialled superbly well and we were ecstatic with how he was going so hopefully he can come back."

Ernie Bung Arrow had dominated the local features, only failing to place once on his first 21 outings.

The exciting campaigner fractured his wrist while trialling at Ballarat, chipping a bone.

He was returning to full fitness and had started trialling but then sustained a monkey muscle knock, forcing him out of action again.

After decent trials last week, he goes from box one at Gawler.

“When you get an invitation for the Megastar, you accept that sort of invitation,” Johnstone said.

“We are aiming for the Megastar and also Adelaide Cup (in October). Those are two potential ones for him.

“Hopefully he will be back racing soon.”

NSW 2013 Greyhound of the Year Double Twist is among the expressions of interest for the Megastar.

Notables Zipping Willow, Bessy Boo, Stilton Blue and Tommy Brislane are also among the potential field.

Expressions of interest are still being collected for the Megastar, which offers $75,000 to the winner.

The five top nominees – as rated by race assessors – will be seeded for the final on September 12.

Eight others will contest a heat the previous week, with the top three qualifying for the final.

Ten races are on the card at Gawler today.
