Cool Onyx Aiming For Happy Return To Goulburn

By Stuart Turner

Lisa McFarlane is hoping it will be a case of many happy returns for Cool Onyx at Tuesday’s Goulburn meeting.

The solid sprinter makes her first appearance at the track in almost eight months when she goes from box three in the fifth of five Goulburn to Richmond Fifth Grade Sprint Series heats (350m).

Cool Onyx had chalked up six wins from nine starts – including a hat-trick – before failing to trouble the leaders over 440m at Canberra last Sunday.

Trainer McFarlane said her charge may not be suited to the unfamiliar surroundings but she was hopeful of success at her more favoured shorter distance.

“I’m very pleased with how she is going,” McFarlane, who works out of Jerrawa, said. “She’s consistent and she’s hard to beat.

“That was a third and fourth grade at Canberra, which was a little tough for her. She’s going back to fifth grade her (at Goulburn) which I think will suit her better.

“The long straight up there at Goulburn might not suit her (and) she has not been there for a while.

“But fingers crossed that going back in grades will help her.”

Cool Onyx’s father was Victorian El Grand Senor, who racked up a remarkable 35 wins from 43 starts in his notable career.

She hasn’t matched those heights but she’s been a decent performer, notching nine wins and 14 other placings from 31 starts.

“She’s a beautiful little dog – no trouble to work with,” McFarlane said.

“The top grade at Canberra and Richmond is a bit hard for her so we have to try and place her right.

“She’s an honest little greyhound and she’s doing well.”

Zac Retlub (box seven) and True Harlequin, from box five, are both handy greyhounds and likely to be strong opposition.

Other greyhounds to look out for on the day include Unleash De Magic, who goes from box two in the fourth heat.

Little Miss Lava goes from box six in the third heat aiming for a third consecutive victory.

Ten races are on the card at Goulburn and action starts at 2.17pm.
