Brothers Doing Battle At Casino

By Stuart Turner

Sibling fortunes are on the line at Friday’s Casino meeting but Trevor Thompson hopes he ends up a winner whatever the outcome.

Thompson’s pair Baiden Rose Hi and Rodger Rose Hi go from boxes six and seven respectively in the AB Casey Memorial Sprint Series Final (484m).

The brothers, who both started racing within a month of each other earlier this year, have compiled almost identical records and only 0.02 splits their best over the distance at the Queen Elizabeth Park track.

Lismore trainer Thompson said Rodger had initially been more impressive, but Baiden was now starting to make his mark.

“I’m not sure I can choose a winner between them,” he said with a smile.

“Up until a few weeks ago I would have said Rodger was the pick, but Baiden has done well recently.

“His run home times the last few weeks at Albion Park have been among the best of the day.

“If they both get away clean then it will be interesting, but they are certainly not home and hosed to win this one.”

Both greyhounds, who were born to Vapour Whirl and She Rose Hi, are compiling solid records.

Rodger is currently ahead on wins (six to five) and racked up another victory at Casino last Friday.

Not to be outshone, Baiden has previously won over the distance at Casino and has only failed to place once in his last five outings.

“I would give Rodger the slight advantage but they are both boxed awkwardly,” Thompson said.

“There’s a lot of speed inside them, which to my mind gives Rodger a bit of an advantage.

“When he goes out he usually goes right so he could avoid trouble.

“If he goes out well, he might be in the clear. On the other hand, he might get smashed by the eight (greyhound).

“I think they’ll both eventually be 500m or maybe even 600m dogs. I’m just glad they are in my kennel.”

Thompson said both may have a crack at next month’s Group 3 Charcoal Inn Casino Cup, which carries $25,000 to the winner.

DEAN Turley’s box two greyhound Wilhem (box two) and Bradley Northfield’s fast starter Bralyn Stalker (box four) could also challenge.

Ten races are on the card at Casino and action starts at 12.42pm.
