Wagga To Unveil Track Upgrade

By Stuart Turner

The first meeting at Wagga's freshly upgraded track is taking place on Friday.

The Wagga and District Greyhound Club has conducted the track work, switching from loam to a more sand-based circuit.

It is hoped the scheme, which took about three weeks to under take, will help further enhance the club’s long-term future.

Club treasurer John Hartley said the improved track at the Wagga Showground site would be useful whatever the weather.

“A sand surface will not get too hard, even in the hot summers we get here,” he said.

“At the moment, when we have a bit of rain, the track gets a little slippery as well.

“That increases the risk of pulled muscles and other injuries for the greyhounds.

“Hopefully with this surface improvement, there will not be as many slips.”

Industry track specialist Brian Barrington undertook the upgrade,  which was approved by the board of Greyhound Racing NSW in June.

The improved track will further boost racing at the track, which hosts 26 TAB meetings each year including its annual Gold Cup meeting every June.

“We get great greyhounds from New South Wales and Victoria travelling here,” Hartley said. “We want to have the best surface possible.

“We are sure this will be a great asset to our club (and) I would like to thank everyone who has helped this come about.”

Ten races are on the card and action starts at 5.39pm.
