It could be a final racing hurrah for Tranquil Zac at Grafton on Thursday but hopes are high he can go out with a bang.
The 76-race veteran goes from box three in the LJ Hooker Real Estate Stakes (480m) aiming for another win in his decent career on the Northern Rivers circuit.
Since returning from a back injury in May, the sprinter has been a consistent performer.
Trainer Garnet Robertson admits he is unsure how much racing his charge has left in him but said another win for the old warrior was certainly possible.
"I would say he's a week-by-week proposition now as far as racing goes," Robertson said.
"There's no secret (to his longevity). He's one of these dogs who likes to race.
"He's a laidback dog - until you get to the kennels anyway."
Tranquil Zac, who will start from box three, has been a dependable performer at North Coast tracks for Robertson.
The sprinter has chalked up 15 victories and 27 placings during his career, all at Grafton and Lismore.
He has placed on eight of his last nine outings and is still running sub-28 second times for the 480m at Grafton.
Toughest opposition is likely from Dave Irwin's Sneaky Little Me in box two.
The handy sprinter pushed Tranquil Zac into second spot when the pair went head-to-head over 480m last Monday at Grafton.
"I think box three will suit Tranquil Zac," Robertson said.
"If he can cut across Dave Irwin's dog at the first turn, he'll be ahrd to stop."
There aren't many cannier trainers around than Robertson, who works just outside Grafton at Junction Hill.
The 70-year-old, whose sons Anthony and Geoffrey are also involved in the sport, has been training for most of the last 40 years.
"I'm always giving them away but the next thing we've got another litter," he said with a smile.
"It keeps me active and I love the greyhounds. They're such good-natured dogs.
"I still get excited. the other night I was barracking (one of my greyhounds) from behind the boxes at Albion Park.
"I think I'll have greyhounds until I can't so anything else."
Ten races are on the card at Grafton and action starts at 3.49pm.
