Cairnlea Layla Doing It Tough For Nationals

By Stuart Turner

Cairnlea Layla hasn't been handed the best of draws but she cannot be discounted from the SA Sprint Championship Final (515m).

That's the verdict from trainer Robyn Mackellar ahead of what should be a highly competitive final at Angle Park on Thursday.

The exciting sprinter goes into the race as one of the state's most in-form performers and with an impressive 17 wins from 30 starts to her name.

Mackellar admitted her charge will have to do it tough from box eight but said she shouldn’t be discounted.

"It's going to be tough," Mackellar said. "Some of the greyhounds in there are stronger than her.

"There is early speed on the inside and she will not be able to get across as easily.

"If she can get across early and lead, then it will take something good to stop her.

Cairnlea Layla's victory in last week's heats was her sixth straight in a run stretching back to mid-June.

She's won from the outside on two other occasions at Angle Park but the opposition is more daunting this time.

"Sidney's Shadow (in box one) is a very fast dog," Mackellar said. "He has the early speed.

"He could be hard to stop."

Mackellar also has Regal Looper, who has also been in consistent form recently, going from box four.

Wild Soul (box two) slightly disappointed in last week's heats but could also figure.

Mackellar has been training seriously for about three years and is based at Lewiston, just outside of Gawler.

She is excited at earning a crack at the National finals at WA's Cannington track on August 23 - which would be six days after her 32nd birthday.

"It's very nerve-racking," she said. "It would definitely be a training highlight.

"I'm really enjoying training. It's certainly a lot easier away from the suburbs.

"I love working with the dogs and the quality of dogs we are getting in the kennels now makes it very enjoyable."

The SA Distance final also takes place earlier in the evening over 731m.

Psychotic Gold (box four) is leading the way with Tab Fixed Odds at $2.20.

The Distance final is off at 8.58pm (AEST), with the Sprint final at 9.41pm (AEST).
