Britton Has Great Hopes For Cannington

By James Broadhurst

Linda Britton has very good prospects heading into the Ascot Sign Co “The Westchase” final (530m) at Cannington on Saturday.

The state’s leading trainer will be represented by Star Recall and My Mate Cobber, the equal fastest qualifiers from last weekend’s heats.

It’s a one-two punch that ‘Aussie’ boxing ace Joe Bugner would be proud of.

Britton also has Battler’s Boy competing for her and he’s a handy up-and-comer in his own right but from the pink he looks a roughie here.

Star Recall and My Mate Cobber are the clear standouts of this field.

Both continued their superb recent form as they each clocked 30.35 to win their heats by over nine lengths.

My Mate Cobber (pictured with connections) has drawn the four while Star Recall is out in box six but it’s the later that better placed on the grid.

Jumping in-between the pair is Full Of Beans, a greyhound that cuts hard left out the traps.

If he begins will his usual vigour Full of Beans will not only impede My Mate Cobber’s run to the first corner but he’s also likely to clear a path for Star Recall.

Star Recall has a good record from wide draws anyway and she has the edge in experience, particular in feature race finals, so barring any misadventure she should be hard to beat.

If there’s any greyhound in the race that looms as a spoiler, it’s Fun Princess.

She’ll need her best but she’s drawn to give herself very chance from the pole.

While Britton’s main focus will be on the Westchase she’ll also be keeping a keen eye on the 530m Free To All (Race 4) where her star sprinter Zelemar Fever returns to the track following nearly two months absence and will resume hostilities with her great rival On Coin.

Zelemar Fever has only raced twice since she was injured during the Sapphire Crown in May and at her last appearance she went down to On Coin in the final of the Winter Cup.

If she’s at peak fitness Zelemar Fever will take it up to On Coin, a greyhound which comes back to racing after a couple of weeks away himself.

Proven Will saluted in 30.29 in this grade three runs back and with an inside draw he can crash the party.
