Miss Bowie Aims To Rock Wentworth Park

By Stuart Turner

Miss Bowie has a kennel name in honour of the famous rock star’s intergalactic alter-ego – and she is threatening some out-of-this world performances herself.

The promising bitch, who has won six of her first seven starts, goes for trainers Lynn and Michael Maney from box one in the second heat of the AAA Radiator Sprint Series (520m) at Wentworth Park on Monday night.

She didn’t enjoy the happiest of debuts at the Glebe track earlier this month, missing the start and taking a knock to trail home in sixth place.

With a break from racing and some good trials behind her again, though, Michael said it’s all systems go now for the eye-catching newcomer.

“We’ve sorted her out and she’s looking good again,” he said.

“She’s been going fantastic. She’s just a natural.

“We were looking for suitable races and thought this fitted the bill.”

Miss Bowie has made a noteworthy impact since a debut victory over 307m at Bathurst in February.

She chalked up three more wins at that level before successfully moving up to 520m.

Miss Bowie disappointed on her Wentworth Park debut from the rail but is capable of winning here, with Miss Pocano (box three) looking the strongest opponent.

The impressive novice’s kennel name is Ziggy – just like the fictional alien rock star created by David Bowie.

“Her kennel name is Ziggy – like Ziggy Stardust,” Maney said. “We’re of that age group.

“I wish she didn’t have box one again (but) if she starts well, she will be hard to stop.

“It’s just good to get a greyhound racing so well.

“Every time we’ve planned something with her, something has gone wrong, so we’ll take things steady.”

The couple, who have been involved in greyhounds for more than three decades, moved to Bathurst from Tasmania about 15 years ago.

They both work full-time which means it’s a busy life for the pair.

“Sometimes we come and go, cross paths briefly and leave notes,” Maney said.  “It’s pretty full-on.

Why do we do it? Because we love greyhounds.

“They are such nice animals and people don’t appreciate them.

“It also feels like a good achievement when you breed and rear one and it wins a race.”

The race is the sixth of ten on the field at Wentworth Park on Monday night, with action starting at 7.13pm.
