Bessy Boo In Nationals Shake-Up

By Stuart Turner

Bessy Boo is shaping up as the latest contender for a crack at this year's AGRA National Sprint Championships after producing another storming run.

The 2014 Peter Mosman Classic winner delivered another superb outing in his Rapidvite Sprint Series Heat (520m) at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

His victory, chalked up in 29.86 over a strong field, has earned him a berth in the final.

Co-trainer Christine Proctor is now aiming him for a place at the 530m Nationals, which will see state heats prior to the final in WA on August 23.

"He's going unbelievable," Proctor said.  "He is doing things you just don't see many other dogs doing.

"The Nationals are coming up (and) we've been looking at that."

This year has certainly been one to remember for Bessy Boo.

He has secured  nine wins, including last month's Peter Mosman final, and has an overall record of 13 triumphs from 38 starts.

Proctor has declared the greyhound (pictured here centre with connections) as the joint best she's owned in more than four decades of training alongside husband Alan.

The Appin trainer put Bessy Boo on a par with Lucy Lawless, who earned more than $100,000 prize-money and chalked up 32 wins from 70 starts in the late 1990s.

"She was a darling," Proctor said. "She won about 20 races at Wentworth Park.

"(Bessy Boo) is a fantastic dog too. He just has that will to win.

"It's very hard to get a dog like this one."

This Saturday's final at Wentworth Park will also include Zipping Summah, who won her heat on Saturday in an impressive 29.86.

Meanwhile, Queen Esther is also being targeted for a possible crack at the Nationals despite slipping up at Wentworth Park on Saturday.

The bitch has earned nine wins in 2014 but could only finish fifth in her Rapidvite Sprint Series heat.

Trainer Nolene Holloway said her greyhound paid for missing the jump but is still looking sharp and should be running again at the Glebe track this Saturday.

The Hamlyn Terrace trainer expressed reservations about sending the bitch on the long trek to Cannington for the Nationals final if she qualified, but said she was considering a possible crack at the forthcoming heats.
