My Mate Cobber Looking Good

By James Broadhurst

My Mate Cobber should be very hard to topple when he goes around in the first heat of the Ascot Sign Co Westchase (530m) at Cannington on Saturday.

The talented Linda Britton-trained youngster has taken his game to new heights in recent times before suffering a minor setback at his last start.

He reeled off three impressive victories during June, clocking in the 30.30 over the 530m trip on each occasion.

A torrid and messy run at his latest attempt, where he boxed on stoically to grab second place despite being checked and pushed wide early, brought him to the steward’s attention and he was forced to complete a satisfactory trial during the week.

In his solo outing My Mate Cobber looked in fine fettle and immediately dropped back into the grove with a run of 30.36.

From an inside draw My Mate Cobber should be able to elude any early grief which might hold him up.

My Mate Cobber’s biggest threat is lurking out in the pink in the shape of Fun Princess, a last start winner and a greyhound racing in career best form at the moment.

Her main asset, her launching pace, will be somewhat nullified, however,  by the fact that she’s jumping from the pink.

At the other end of traps Panther Monelli can be a factor if he takes advantage of the pole.

In heat two (Race 6) Star Recall returns from a month on the sidelines after being rubbed out for marring.

The suspension was a disastrous turn of events for Star Recall.

Not only did she blow the chance to claim a very winnable Free To All in the city, which brought to a halt a sequence of six wins on the trot, but the time off denied her the opportunity to have a crack at the WA Oaks.

The Perth Cup finalist will be justifiable favourite but faces some stern competition.

With a hat-trick of wins under his belt and red stretch-vest on his back Full Of Beans must be considered.

He can ping the lids and is a good chance to grab the frontrunner’s position so it’ll be a question of whether or not he can hold out the stronger chasers, of which Stangafied is at the head of the queue.

Stangafied (pictured with connections) has just completed a pair of victories over the ‘600’ and he has won 10 of his past 17 races.

He has real power in the later stages and if he’s anywhere near them at the business end Stangafied is a big chance to steamroll over the top of his rivals.

Ambitious Gem and Battler’s Boy aren’t without hope if the luck goes their way.

Cannington racing is under way at 9.05pm (AEST).
