Another crack at the Sportingbet Megastar looks on the cards for Double Twist after she once again showed her class at Dapto.
The 2013 NSW Greyhound of The Year (pictured) recorded her 25th win in 45 starts with an overwhelming victory in Thursday night’s Coca-Cola Dapto Oaks Final (520m).
It was a second consecutive victory in the $5000-to-the-winner final for Double Twist, who also came within 0.05 of breaking her own track record at the Wollongong track.
Trainer Garry Edwards said another crack at the September’s $75,000-to-the-winner Group 1 race at Dapto – which his charge contested last year and finished sixth in the final – was on the radar.
“We won’t be counting our chickens but the invitation (for the Megastar) has gone in,” Edwards said.
“Last year we were up against some good dogs. In a race like that you are against the best company.
“Ever since I started her she has gone well at Dapto so she would have to have a chance.”
Double Twist was a $1.30 favourite for the Oaks and justified that tag with a crushing 13-length win, achieved in a storming 29.49.
It was a popular victory for the sprinter, whose superb 2013 included triumphs in the Group 3 Christmas Gift and the Group 3 Nowra Puppy Classic.
“I think it’s just her determination that makes people like her,” Edwards said. “There’s not many dogs who can get bumped and come back and win.
“She’s pint-sized but she is just determined to keep going.
“I do get quite emotional when my greyhounds win – especially the girls – and I’m on cloud nine right now.”
Edwards said he now intended to possibly trial Double Twist at The Gardens, with a view to a possible run over 515m shortly.
Another trip to Victoria’s Sandown Park – where she was unable to make an impact in two runs last year – is also possible.
Nowra-based Edwards, who also won the Oaks in 2010 with More Space, said Double Twist still had plenty of racing left in her yet.
“You would think she might be slowing down but she still keeps jumping,” he said. “She seems to pull up really well in herself.
“I took her for a walk (the morning after the race) and she was jumping around.
“You don’t want to overtax any greyhounds (so) if we could go through to the end of the year I would be happy.”
